Hey There!
My name is Shannie McCabe, I am a horticulturist with a knack for communications. I attended the University of Rhode Island where I got a B.S in Environmental Horticulture. Over the past 15 years my career has taken many exciting turns, I have been a farm manager, seed catalog writer and horticulture educator. My writing is a distinctive blend as I pull from my formal horticulture education, over a decade of hands-on farming experience and a lifelong obsession with creative writing and storytelling. Each plant or seed has a fascinating story to tell, I am grateful to take part in their legacy.
My Story
Growing up on a small island with a tourism based economy meant that my public speaking and storytelling abilities were finely honed from a very young age. Raised on a horse ranch, I was leading guided horseback rides from my earliest teen years. I demonstrated and described the basics of horse riding to my novice customers as we traversed the rolling green hills and beaches of my hometown. By 2012, I had graduated from the University of Rhode Island where I got a B.S in Environmental Horticulture. It was in the university’s historic glass greenhouses where my passion for plants was ignited. I began working on organic farms and managed a small historic market farm in my hometown. I fell in love with farming, and especially coveted my collection of seed catalogs, the detailed descriptions and colorful images fuelled my garden plans. When my favorite seed company posted a farm manager's position, I just had to apply. I swiftly moved to the Missouri Ozarks and embarked on a 9 year long journey. I worked as a farm manager, catalog writer and all around content creator. I wore many hats over this time, working both onsite and remotely and I have traveled globally to represent the company. I have also worked as a freelance horticulture writer, a flower farm manager and helped in the early development of a gardening reality television series. I look forward to bringing my unique brand of creative-yet-scholarly plant prose to a wider audience in the future.
